Intensive Services

Adult Intensive Services targets persons who have a chronic mental illness and have long-term and short-term psychiatric hospital history. Most services are offered in the community where the consumer lives. The overall goal is to prevent continued psychiatric hospital care by providing support, skills training, and linkage to natural supports that will assist the consumer to remain a dynamic part of the community.


Provides a variety of intensive services and long-term supports for adults described below.

Usually referrals are made directly by insurance company care managers, by staff in Metrocare Services outpatient clinics, through the Metrocare Services Call Center, or directly from other services providers.

ACT (Assertive Community Treatment)

Services: Intensive monitoring, treatment, and rehabilitative training for serious mentally ill adults with a history of multiple hospitalizations and/or difficulty in treatment provided by a consistent team of doctors, nurses, caseworkers, and rehabilitative staff. Only the Coordinator can accept referrals.

ACT provides services to the adult mental health population with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar, schizoaffective, and major depression w/severe psychotic feature disorders, and a chronic hospitalization history with two admissions into a psychiatric facility within the last six months or four admissions within the last two years.

ACT provides psychiatric services, counseling, housing support services, substance abuse treatment, and rehabilitative and case management services. Ninety percent of services are provided in the community, and ACT is on call 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Duration of treatment averages 6 to 8 months.

Success Story

Jim is diagnosed with schizophrenia and has had 4 hospitalizations at a state hospital within the last year. On release, ACT supports consumer in locating housing and reestablishing Social Security benefits. ACT staff coach Jim in transporting self by city bus, working on a budget, developing socialization skills, and maintaining residence & personal hygiene. ACT monitors & educates Jim in taking his medication as prescribed, recognizing symptoms of his mental illness, and reaching out for support as needed. Jim has relapses over an eight-month period; however, through the education and coaching, he reaches out for support and develops a support system and actualizes self esteem so that he is capable of requiring a less intensive level of service, and is transferred to a Metrocare Services Outpatient Clinic.

Special Needs Offender Program

Services: Intensive case management, psychiatric services, and life skills training for adults with mental illness or co-occurring substance abuse disorder who are involved in the criminal justice system.
