DESCRIPTION:The cultural diversity within the United States continues to grow. Some individuals immigrating to the United States may be undocumented or hold a refugee or asylum status. As Counselors\, we must understand the unique challenges faced by these groups and potential barriers to effective helping. In this session\, we will explore a need-based\, trauma-informed approach to support these diverse groups. \nBy the end of this training session\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe undocumented immigrant\, asylum seeker\, and refugee populations\, particularly cultural groups that have been accessing services in our college and community mental health settings In Dallas County\nAnalyze the ethical and professional competency standards for counseling diverse populations\nIdentify challenges that may impact the mental health of these diverse groups\nExplain how a trauma-informed\, need-based counseling approach is helpful when serving these groups\nIntegrate this framework into their counseling practice when serving undocumented immigrants\, asylum seekers\, and refugees\n\nRegister Here!\nCost: $25 (Metrocare staff and UNT Dallas students are free) \nLocation: Founders Hall 138 \nSeats are limited. Breakfast will be provided. \nPlease be sure to review our policy and procedure for any questions regarding cancellations\, refunds and confidentiality. \nContinuing Education Hours: \nLPCs Earn 3 CE (Continuing Education) hours\n \n  \n  \n  \n____________________________________________________________________ \nPresenter: Teresa Parnell\, MS\, LPC \nTeresa Espino Parnell\, LPC\, is the Director of the Counseling & Wellness Center at the University of North Texas at Dallas and co-founder of Adulting Counseling and Consulting\, where she provides bilingual mental health counseling services. Teresa holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Community Mental Health Counseling from The University of North Texas at Dallas and has more than 7 years of clinical experience working with emerging adults in higher education and private practice. Teresa practices using the theoretical frameworks of Person-Centered Therapy\, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\, and is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. She has extensive experience serving culturally diverse individuals in the DFW area\, including individuals who identify as undocumented immigrants\, asylum seekers\, or refugees. \nPresenter: Erin Kaszynski\, PhD\, LPC \nDr. Kaszynski is the Associate Director of Clinical Education and Research at ACER. She holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision with an emphasis in Multicultural Counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. Dr. K has experience providing trauma-focused services to a diverse population across multiple counseling settings.
