Services: Individuals with dual diagnoses (both a divelopmental disability and a mental illness) often require specialized support. Behavioral and Psychiatric Services (BPS) provides this through Outpatient, Behavioral and Crisis Services. Accurate evaluation and on-going support from psychiatric and behavioral interventions minimize the loss of community or vocational placements and subsequently the need for re-hospitalization. BPS is designed to provide services and support to people who have mental retardation and mental illness or severe behavioral challenges, so that they may be successful living and working in the community.

Populations Served: Dually diagnosed, mental retardation and mental illness and/or severe behavior disorders.

Admission Criteria: Resident of Dallas County, at least three years of age, diagnosis of mental retardation or Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders, and mental illness and/or behavior disorder that impairs daily functioning and places the individual's community placement at risk.

Core Services and Program Activities: Individuals with dual diagnoses are referred by Service Coordination from all areas of the MRA system and community agencies. Upon referral, the individual is assessed to determine the primary areas of need. If psychiatric care is indicated, an initial evaluation is scheduled with the psychiatrist and appropriate team members. Follow-up appointments are scheduled according to individual need and medication stability. If behavioral intervention is indicated, a formal functional analysis of the behavior is completed in the consumer's natural environment, and behavioral recommendations are made. Behavior Specialists and field clinicians train families or primary care givers to carry out the intervention or training in the home, work, or school setting. On-going clinical oversight is provided by a Masters level Behavior Analyst. Clinical consultation is available 24 hours per day, seven days a week through the Crisis Services team. Crisis prevention planning is also completed with individuals and families.
